A Quick Guide to Window Terminology

So, you’re in the market for windows. Whether you’re shopping for replacement windows or brand new ones, you may be surprised to find that the window world has its own unique language.

As an authorized dealer of OKNA windows, our team at Action Windows & Siding strives to help our customers understand window terminology so they can make the best possible buying decisions.

Here is a quick guide to help you get started:

  • Awning Windows. The sash of these windows is hinged at the top. The glass opens outward at the bottom by way of a crank handle.
  • Bay Windows. This setup typically has one large picture window in the center, surrounded by operating windows on either side, but the units can be designed as stationary or operating pieces, or any combination thereof. Combinations with double-hung or casement-style flanking windows are most common.
  • Casement Windows. These windows are hinged on either side, allowing the sash to provide maximum ventilation by opening the sash outward in a swinging motion.
  • Crank Handle. Consisting of an arm and knob assembly, this type of opening and closing device is often used on casement and awning windows.
  • Double Hung Windows. Two sashes operate mutually exclusively within a master frame. This setup allows for easy cleaning, as the upper and lower halves can easily slide by each other, tilting inward for optimal accessibility.
  • Energy Star. This is a term commonly referenced with household appliances and equipment. It refers to an independent government program, which is responsible for the development and oversight of guidelines designed to recognize the energy efficiency of certain household elements.
  • Fenestration. This is the process whereby window and door openings are created within structured walls.
  • Hopper Window. These windows open by being pulled inward, as a result of the sash being hinged along the bottom.
  • Operable Window. Any type of window that can be opened to provide ventilation.
